Errors and need for safeguards <br />•From the federal Bureau of Justice Assistance (DOJ) “License Plate Reader Policy Development Template” (Feb., 2017): <br />•“Even with the proven efficacy of this technology, justice entities should be alert to risk of erroneous or deficient LPR data...Justice entities should therefore put in place appropriate policies and procedures to guard against possible errors and other potential problems. Strong control and oversight are critical considerations in policy development, especially as the civil liberties implications of possible unforeseen derivative uses may be significant. Such efforts will not only enhance mission effectiveness but also safeguard privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties of individuals. (emphasis added)
