Purpose: In accordance with SLPD Policies 300 and 306, rifles are to be used as precision <br />weapons to address a threat which require increased accuracy and/or to reach threats <br />which are at a greater distance than a handgun can possibly proficiently address, if present <br />and feasible. This weapons system is also designed to ballistically address threats which <br />could be protected by body armor, preventing a handgun from being able to address <br />proficiently or effectively. <br />f. Authorized Use: Only members that are POST certified and have received training specific to <br />the use of patrol rifles during the course of their duties are authorized to use carry and/or <br />use the patrol rifle in accordance with SLPD Policies 300 and 306. <br />g. Fiscal Impact: <br />i. Purchase Price: Personally owned <br />ii. Ongoing Yearly Maintenance: None/personally owned <br />h. Training: Prior to using a rifle, officers must be certified by POST instructors in the operation <br />of the rifle. Additionally, all members that operate any rifle are required to qualify in <br />accordance with SLPD Policy 306 <br />i. Legal and Procedural Rules: Use of the patrol rifle is regulated by SLPD Lexipol Policies 300 <br />and 306. It is the policy of the SLPD to utilize rifles only for official law enforcement <br />purposes, and pursuant to State and Federal law regarding the use of force. <br /> <br />20.19. Winchester .223 Rifle Rounds <br />a. Description - Winchester .223 Remington ammunition that is fired from an AR-15 rifle with <br />more accuracy and greater distance than handguns. features a lead core 55 grain full metal <br />jacketed bullet known for its positive functioning and exceptional accuracy.
