Modern-Day San Leandro <br />Today, the land we ca ll San Leandro is high ly urba n ized, <br />with an estimated 60% of the city's land covered by <br />impervious surfaces. The majority of San Leandro is <br />zoned for single-family and duplex housing, which bodes <br />well for trees, since residentia l areas provide great <br />opportunity for trees to l ive long healthy lives with space <br />for adeq u at e growth. <br />The preva lence of industrial zoning poses a challenge to <br />the urban forest, as in dustria l a rea s fulfill eco nomic <br />n eeds but provide le ss opportunity for green space and <br />are associated with higher lev els of pollution . As San <br />Leandro accommodates a growing population w ith <br />development a nd re development, o pe n s pace <br />conse rvation and tree prese rvation efforts will be key to <br />e nsuring th at trees w ill continue to t h rive. <br />Natural Resources Today <br />Th e City o f San Lea ndro m akes del i berate e ffort to <br />maintain it s natural resources, with the San Fran c isco Bay <br />waterfront on th e west s id e of th e city, Cha bot Par k i n th e <br />n orth east, and San Leand ro Creek running b e tween th e <br />t wo. Th e City <br />ba lances the resto ration need s o f t hese verdant natural <br />a reas with t h e maintenance needs of inte ntionally <br />planted tree -lin ed str eets, trees in yards, and m an i c ured <br />commercia l la ndscapes.
