<br />IN THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2026-026 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION TO APPOINT JAMES AGUILAR TO FILL THE DISTRICT 2 VACANCY ON THE CITY COUNCIL <br /> <br />WHEREAS, having been duly elected on November 5, 2024, District 2 Council Member Byan <br />Azevedo resigned from the City Council effective February 10, 2026, causing a vacancy to exist on the <br />City Council; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in accordance with Section 250 of the Charter of the City of San Leandro, a vacancy in <br />the office of Council Member or Mayor shall be filled by appointment by the Council within sixty days <br />after its existence; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the appointee shall hold office until the next general municipal election and until a <br />successor is elected and qualified, and any unexpired remainder of the term of such office shall be filled <br />by the voters at such election; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, on February 17, 2026, the City Council declared its intention to fill the District 2 <br />Council vacancy by appointment, approved the process and timeline for filling the vacancy, and directed <br />staff to provide public notice of the vacancy and application process; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, twelve applications were submitted by members of the public, of which seven were <br />eligible to be considered for the vacancy by meeting the residency and voter registration requirements in <br />Section 205 of the Charter of the City of San Leandro; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, on March 23, 2026, Council interviewed the applicants and discussed nominations, <br />resulting in James Aguilar being nominated to fill the District 2 vacancy on the City Council. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the City of San Leandro City Council does RESOLVE as follows: <br /> <br />That James Aguilar is appointed to the City Council to fill the District 2 vacancy caused by the <br />resignation of Bryan Azevedo, to a term expiring December 31, 2026, and until a successor is elected and <br />qualified. <br /> <br />Introduced by Councilmember Victor Aguilar and passed and adopted this 23rd day of March 2026 <br />by the following vote: <br /> <br />AYES: Councilmember Aguilar, Boldt, Bowen, Simon, Viveros-Walton, Mayor González (6) <br /> <br />NOES: None (0) <br /> <br />ABSENT: None (0) <br /> <br /> <br />ATTEST: ___________________________________ <br /> Sarah K.
