TO:City Council FROM:Fran Robustelli City Manager BY:City Council FINANCE REVIEW:Not Applicable TITLE:Proclaiming May as Affordable Housing Month May 2022 as Affordable Housing Month WHEREAS, quality affordable homes are vital to healthy, safe, and inclusive communities; and WHEREAS, even before the COVID-19 pandemic, rising housing costs led longtime residents to be displaced, live in overcrowded homes, or experience homelessness, threatening our region’s racial diversity and economic opportunity; and WHEREAS, the short-term protections afforded to renters during the pandemic are coming to an end, requiring long-term, sustainable solutions to promote housing security; and WHEREAS, stable affordable homes are the solution to homelessness; and WHEREAS, San Leandro is committed to advancing programs and policies that promote affordable development and advance fair housing for low-income communities and communities of color in their 6th Cycle Housing Element; and WHEREAS, regional housing organizations are continuing to recognize May as Bay Area Affordable Housing Month because regional action to expand affordability and stability are key parts of recovery from the pandemic, and ensure that everyone has a home; and WHEREAS, East Bay Housing Organizations has organized Affordable Housing Week for 26 years, acknowledging the need for and benefits of affordable homes. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter, do hereby proclaim May as “Affordable Housing Month” in San Leandro. THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that San Leandro will continue its support of affordable and stable housing at the local, regional, state, and federal levels.
