Discussion Regarding Holding City's General Municipal Elections in November of Even- <br />Numbered Years <br /> <br />2. Update on Instant Run-off Voting <br /> <br />Agenda Items 1 and 2 were discussed together. City Clerk Handa provided an update on the <br />status of the availability of an Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) system for the City's next General <br />Municipal Election. The Alameda County Registrar of Voters (ROV) has contracted with <br />Sequoia Voting Systems for voting equipment, and included in the agreement is $350,000 for <br />development of an IRV system. The ROV is confident that an IRV system will be available for <br />use in November 2008. <br /> <br />Committee Member Santos commented that he was one of the fIrst members of the Council to <br />vocalize support for IRV and has been involved in discussions at the County level. Committee <br />Member Gregory asked about the drawbacks of an IRV election. Committee Member Santos <br />noted that there is a wealth of information regarding IRV on the Internet. <br /> <br />Ms. Handa reported that while it is not yet offIcial, the statewide primary election date for 2008 <br />will likely move from June to February.
