CITY AND SAN LORENZO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT <br />LIAISON COMMITTEE <br />February 28, 2008 <br />1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. <br />San Leandro City Hall <br />835 East 14th Street <br />San Leandro, California <br />(Sister Cities Gallery Room) <br />HIGHLIGHTS <br />Committee Members: Councilmember Jim Prola, Councilmember Diana Souza, <br />Councilmember Joyce Starosciak, Board Member Gene Judson, <br />Board Member Isabel Polvorosa <br />City Staff: City Manager John Jermanis, Assistant City Manager Stephen <br />Hollister, Assistant to the City Manager Jacqui Diaz <br />SLzUSD Staff: Superintendent Dr. Dennis Byas, Associate Superintendent Larry <br />Maniscalo, Assistant Superintendent Lowell Shira <br />Public Present: Betty Moose, Jim Sherwood, Marty Lantz <br />The meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m. by Councilmember Diana Souza. <br />1. Discussion of Internship Opportunities for High School Students <br />Mr. Larry Maniscalo presented the small learning communities/academy concept <br />occurring at the high school level. A packet was distributed which included <br />brochures on each of the "schools" that have been created. They include The Futures <br />Academy, Health and Medical Academy, Bay Area Digital Arts, ComPASS <br />program, and Tech-Links, as well as others. Each program has curriculum designed <br />with specific program emphasis. The academies will be offered to all incoming Stn <br />grade students; each family to select their choices based on interest. In the future an <br />early college program will be developed. Programs are offered on both high school <br />campuses; a traditional high school experience is also available. The future <br />challenges will be to estimate and forecast staffing needs. <br />Council member Starosciak asked about the length of program and if students could <br />change; it was explained that students are asked for a one year commitment to a <br />specific program. District staff commented on the program needs, challenges to <br />
