CITY OF SAN LEANDRO STAFF REPORT DATE: May 8, 2008 TO: John Jermanis, City Manager ~` ,; FROM: Carolyn Knudtso ,Director Recreation and Human Services Department BY: Joann Oliver, Manager Recreation and Human Services Department SUBJECT PROJECT/PROJECT DESCRIPTION: APPROVED AND FORWARDED TO CITY COUNCIL Jo ~~ Jermanis C ' anager MATTER OF RECOMMENDATION BY THE RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION FOR FISCAL YEAR 2008-09 COMMUNITY BENEFIT GRANT PROGRAM SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION Attached for City Council approval are the Recreation and Parks Commission funding recommendations for the 2008-09 Community Benefit Grant Program. A summary of the recommendations and proposed programs is attached. BACKGROUND Analysis The Recreation and Parks Commission (RAPC) reviewed eleven proposals using guidelines to assess the program's outreach and whether the activity will broaden the scope of cultural and enrichment opportunities for San Leandro residents. The Commission also focused on providing support to proposals that have broad community benefit. Attached is a summary of the Recreation and Parks Commission's recommendations. Following is a summary of significant funding highlights: Funding Recommendations (See Attached Summary) ^ Recommend funding all currently funded agencies: o Most of the agencies are funded with a small increase. o San Leandro High School Musical Theater is funded at prior year level. o Washington Manor World Dancers is funded with a decrease. RAPC goal is to wean the smaller programs that do not have broad community benefit from ongoing City funding. ^ Recommend funding one new agency: o San Leandro Historical Society ^ The applicant did not attend the applicant mandatory presentation meeting on April 21, however, did attend the Recreation and Parks Commission meeting on May 7, 2008.
