IN THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO <br />RESOLUTION NO.2008- <br />RESOLUTION APPROVING ENDORSING SAN LEANDRO <br />SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL CAMPAIGN <br />WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro has completed a number of significant Safe Routes <br />to Schools infrastructure projects to improve the safety and walkability of our school <br />neighborhoods; and <br />WHEREAS, these infrastructure improvements represent only the "Engineering" <br />component of the recommended and federally recognized "Five E's," which are Education, <br />Encouragement, Enforcement, Evaluation, and Engineering; and <br />WHEREAS, the National Center for Safe Routes to Schools states that projects that <br />incorporate all five E's are likely to be more effective and sustainable, and projects utilizing this <br />comprehensive approach are more likely to receive Federal and State Safe Routes to Schools <br />infrastructure funding; and <br />WHEREAS, the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools Partnership Program exists to <br />provide free services encompassing the Five E's; and <br />WHEREAS, the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools program is prepared to bring <br />their services and expertise to the city of San Leandro to improve school safety and walkability <br />and to work to reduce the number of automobiles traveling to and from schools; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the City of San Leandro does RESOLVE to strongly support and <br />endorse the Safe Routes to Schools Program in San Leandro, and seeks to partner with the <br />Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools Program to pilot this program in Roosevelt Elementary <br />School and Bancroft Middle School. <br />Introduced by Councilmember and passed and adopted this <br />17~' day of November, 2008, by the following called vote: <br />Members of the Council: <br />AYES: <br />NOES: <br />ABSENT: <br />ATTEST: <br />Marian Handa, City Clerk <br />
