The resolution endorsed and promoted the use of the
Alameda County Residential Green Building Guidelines, now under the auspices of Build It
Green and called GreenPoints (for new home construction, home remodeling and multi-family
development), the U.S. Green Building Council LEEDTM rating systems (for new commercial
construction and remodeling), and the Bay-Friendly Landscape Guidelines for residential and
commercial projects in San Leandro. Direction was also provided to staff to return with an
ordinance to mandate the LEEDTM and Bay Friendly Landscaping for City-owned projects. The
City Council adopted a Municipal Green Building Ordinance which mandated LEED Silver
certification for City buildings in May 2008.
The Bay Friendly Landscape Ordinance for civic projects is expected to promote economic and
environmental health in the City, through the design, construction, and operation of
environmentally superior landscaping for its own facilities. The ordinance will also provide
leadership to both the private and public sectors. Bay Friendly landscaping practices will enable
the City to reduce its energy and water consumption as well as reduce waste from it landscape
maintenance operations.
