The most distinctive
feature of the intersection is the presence of a right-turn lane island at the southeast corner that
houses an electric pole with a set of traffic signals.
In November 2006, the State of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), through the
Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), approved $419,220 in federal funding for the
Washington Avenue and Estabrook Street Intersection project.
The City Council approved the plans and specifications and called for bids on June 1, 2009. The
Washington Avenue and Estabrook Street Intersection Improvement project will focus on
improvements for pedestrian and vehicular traffic safety at the intersection. It will also connect
the traffic signals at the subject intersection to the City's Traffic Operation Center by extending
the City's fiber optic network from the intersection of San Leandro Boulevard and Marina
Boulevard.
