Hollister <br />City Manager <br />TO: Stephen Hollister, City Manager <br />FROM: Carolyn Knudtson, Director <br />Recreation and Human Services <br />SUBJECT <br />MATTER OF RECOMMENDATION TO MOVE FORWARD IN THE PLANNING AND <br />DESIGN OF A MEMORIAL COMMEMORATING LUSTER KNIGHT AS OUTLINED IN <br />THE LETTER FROM THE RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION TO CITY COUNCIL <br />DATED OCTOBER 7, 2009. <br />SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION <br />Staff requests approval to move forward in the planning and design of a Memorial <br />commemorating Luster Knight's contributions as outlined in the letter from the Recreation and <br />Parks Commission to City Council. <br />BACKGROUND <br />In response to the interest expressed by several Council Members, Alameda County Fire <br />Department and community groups for some type of Memorial to commemorate the life and <br />works of Luster Knight, the Recreation and Parks Commission held several meetings and <br />discussed ideas with staff from the Fire Department. <br />The consensus of the Recreation and Parks Commission was to create a Memorial for Luster <br />Knight at Marina Park. The details of the Memorial and the process of how the Memorial would <br />be designed, paid for and built were outlined in a letter to the City Council dated October 7, <br />2009. (See Attached.) <br />Before moving forward and requesting input from the Alameda County Firefighters, community <br />agencies and others to help complete the design for the Memorial as well as help raise funds to <br />build the Memorial; the Recreation and Parks Commission is asking for approval from the City <br />Council to move forward with the process they outlined in the letter. <br />Analysis <br />N/A <br />Current City Council Policy <br />N/A <br />
