Continued Discussion Regarding Ranked Choice Voting
City Clerk Marian Handa reviewed the information on Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) provided to
the Council at its July 13 work session. She noted that the cost estimates for running an RCV
election have been revised downward, and the City could reach abreak-even point after about
two election cycles.
Alameda County Registrar of Voters Dave Macdonald stated that, while the County would not be
using RCV, he has taken the necessary steps to make the system available to the cities that want
to use it. Mr. Macdonald gave an update on the status of the RCV system approval by the
Secretary of State, and on the cost-sharing agreement between the County and the three cities that
are eligible to use the system.
