The Recreation and Parks
Commission was to work with interested parties in developing a design and raising funds for a
Memorial.
After many meetings and much work on behalf of the Commissioners and representatives from
Alameda County Fire Department, Davis Street Family Resource Center, Leadership San
Leandro, members of the public and the Recreation and Parks Commission, the design and
fundraising to pay for the Memorial are complete.
The design includes a circular concrete pad with a fire red drinking faucet and a bench with a
memorial plaque commemorating Luster Knight. As outlined in the October 2009 letter, the
water fountain represents Luster's philosophy of inclusivity and access for all. This was based
on his experience as a young child of being forbidden to use the water fountain at the local park
due to his skin color. Details of the design and costs are attached.
Staff recommends City Council approve the design and construction of the Luster Knight
Memorial.
Previous City Council Action(s)
On October 19, 2009. by Minute Order No. 2009 -040, the City Council approved the
recommendation to create a memorial for Luster Knight at Marina Park, as outlined in the letter
from the Recreation and Parks Commission to the City Council dated October 7, 2009.
