Additional One Time Needs Discussion Summary BUILDING FUTURES Per letter from Building Futures dated April 23, 2012: “For 25 years, the City has helped residents of the San Leandro Shelter
break the cycle of homelessness by approving CDBG funding shelter operations. Unfortunately, over the past two years, CDBG funding from the City for the shelter has been cut by over
50%... The amount of support the City budget allocates – just $14,000 – is not nearly enough for the life-saving services Building Futures provides to about 250 homeless women and children
at the shelter each year… Fixed costs for providing shelter services mean we are at the tipping point. We have been operating in such a lean manner that relatively small bumps in the
road – a computer server breakdown, replacing a water heater, a bedbug infestation, or stall illness or family emergency – have brought us to a significant shortfall in our current budget…”
Liz Varela Executive Director $20,000 SCHOOL COMMUNITY VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROGRAM The County currently funds the Gang Specialist Program in the San Leandro School District at a cost
of approximately $107,000. This program funds two specialists for the district at San Leandro High School, Bancroft Middle School, and John Muir Middle School. The Gang Specialists work
on the school campuses to reduce incidents related to gang activity. Although there is no data available to measure program results/effectiveness, the school district reports that the
program has been effective since gang activity on school grounds has almost been eliminated over the past 6 years. The Gang Specialist grant was slated to end this fiscal year. However,
the County has tentatively agreed to carry the grant an additional year. SLED began fundraising to maintain the program when they learned of the program elimination and raised $45,000
of the $107,000 towards the Gang Specialist Program for 2012-13. With news that the program is still funded, SLED plans to use the donated funds for other important school services.
The school district is requesting additional funding for a third Gang Specialist (approximately $50,000) for 2012-13, with the understanding that the additional position may not be able
to be funded beyond one time funding. A community match will still be required to fully fund this additional position. $25,000 MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY CELEBRATION The MLK celebration
has been successful in prior years with significant attendance. The event has been held at the Marina Community Center and typically features a 1 ½ hour program including musical entertainment,
a speaker, youth participation, children’s crafts, and light refreshments. Matching funds will be requested from the community to help support this program. $5,000
