Pamela Richards, 335 Peralta Avenue, spoke regarding the Resolution the
City Council recently adopted naming San Leandro a yellow-ribbon city.
She said she was upset that no mention had been made in the Daily Review
regarding this Resolution and had discussed the matter with Mr. Linus
at the Review. She said, although the Review finally wrote an article,
it was primarily about Castro Valley and only mentioned San Leandro.
She said she and Bea Hilton had put up a number of yellow ribbons. She
described discussions she had with Ruth Waldron, who suggested a support
group be set up for troops returning from the Persian Gulf and their
families. She asked what plans the City had to welcome the troops home.
She expressed her dismay that when her husband and other troops returned
from Viet Nam they were not welcomed home. She said Mrs. Waldron's son
was in the Persian Gulf and she presented Mrs. Waldron with a bouquet
of red-white-and-blue flowers tied with a yellow ribbon. She gave a
belated but sincere thank you and welcome home to the Viet Nam veterans,
including her own husband.
B. Mayor Karp invited Mr. and Mrs. Whitey Harder to the podium and presented
them with a commendation. He described the Harders' contribution of
flags on East 14th Street from City Hall north and thanked them for being
kind, caring people dedicated to the betterment of San Leandro and for
their concern about our troops.
Mr. Harder thanked the City Council and Don Lee who contributed the poles
for the flags. He also noted that $1,000 was left of his contribution
for the flags and that it would be given to Guide Dogs for the Blind.
C. Mayor Karp also noted that he had a commendation prepared for Don Lee
who had supplied the flag poles. He noted that one of the largest flags
in San Leandro is being flown at Mr. Lee's business, San Leandro
Electric.
