City of San Leandro <br />City Council <br />Meeting Date: February 21, 2023 <br />Agenda Number: 3.a. <br />Agenda Section: RECOGNITIONS <br />File Number: 23-054 <br />File Type: Presentation <br />Proclamation for National Boy Scout Day <br />WHEREAS, the Boy Scouts of America has served youth and families in San Leandro for many years; and <br />WHEREAS, the stated mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to “prepare young people to make ethical and <br />moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law;” and <br />WHEREAS, the Boy Scouts of America offers Scouting experiences for all in the family unit; and <br />WHERAS, the Scout Law stated, “A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, <br />Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent;” and <br />WHEREAS, more than 110 million young people have learned Scouting’s lessons of patriotism, courage, and <br />self-reliance since the Boy Scouts of America’s founding 112 years ago; and <br />WHEREAS, the Boy Scouts of America is committed to helping millions of youth and families succeed by <br />providing the support, friendship, and mentoring necessary to live a happy and fulfilling life; and <br />WHEREAS, the Golden Gate Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America is committed to providing exceptional <br />service to all units in all locations, including San Leandro; and <br />WHEREAS, the Boy Scouts of America just added an Eagle Scout Required Merit Badge titled “Citizenship in <br />Society,” which focuses on the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, and ethical leadership; and <br />WHEREAS, there are 7 troops including Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, Sea Scouts and Scout Leader, <br />serving 143 youth and their families in San Leandro; and <br />WHEREAS, February 8, 2023 is recognized as the 113th birthday of Boy Scouts of America. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I, Juan Gonzalez, III, Mayor of the City of San Leandro, do hereby declare February 8th as <br />Boy Scout Day in San Leandro, and recognize the enrichment that Boy Scouts of America has added to <br />countless youth and families in San Leandro. <br />Page 1 City of San Leandro Printed on 2/15/2023
