City of San Leandro <br />City Council <br />Meeting Date: June 5, 2023 <br />Agenda Number: 3.b. <br />Agenda Section: RECOGNITIONS <br />File Number: 23-240 <br />File Type: Presentation <br />Proclamation celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the San Leandro Kiwanis Club <br />WHEREAS, the first Kiwanis club started its service in Detroit, Michigan, USA, in 1915; and <br />WHEREAS, the Kiwanis Club of San Leandro was chartered on June 5th, 1923, and the first installation of club <br />officers was held at the Estudillo House; and <br />WHEREAS, Kiwanis International is one of the largest service organizations in the world with more than <br />551,000 members of all ages and abilities in more than 80 nations; and <br />WHEREAS, Kiwanians all over the world have united to eliminate diseases such as Iodine Deficiency Disorder <br />and Maternal Neo-Natal Tetanus worldwide; and <br />WHEREAS, the Kiwanis Club of San Leandro serves the mission of Kiwanis International focusing on changing <br />the world by serving children, one child and one community at a time; and <br />WHEREAS, Kiwanians throughout California have united to prioritize young children and families with their <br />campaign known as Young Children, Priority One; and <br />WHEREAS, the Kiwanis Club of San Leandro celebrates and fosters inclusiveness through the objects of <br />Kiwanis like: To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life; and To provide a <br />practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities; and <br />WHEREAS, San Leandro Kiwanians have long been committed to improving our local community by <br />supporting legacy projects such as Lifeline, the Davis Street Family Resource Center, Boys and Girls Clubs, San <br />Leandro School music and sports programs, Special Olympics, Police Appreciation Lunches, Building Futures, Bikes <br />for Tykes, April Showers and many annual city efforts; and <br />WHEREAS, throughout their many years, the San Leandro Kiwanis Club trains and educates youth leaders <br />through their involvement with Circle K Clubs in local colleges, Key Clubs at San Leandro, Arroyo, and San Lorenzo <br />High Schools, Builders Clubs in middle schools and K-Kids at elementary schools; and <br />WHEREAS, the San Leandro Kiwanis Club is celebrating its 100th year serving our community in the spirit of <br />fun, fellowship, and service, and will continue to have a positive impact on our community and all who interact here. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I, Juan González III, Mayor of San Leandro, declare June 5, 2023, as Kiwanis Club of San <br />Leandro Day. <br />IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and <br />caused the Seal of the City of San Leandro to be affixed this <br />5th day of June 2023. <br />____________________________________ <br />Juan González III, Mayor City of San Leandro <br />Page 1 City of San Leandro Printed on 5/31/2023
