SHELIA YOUNG

MAYOR
CITI OF SAN LEANDRO

To:
From:
Re:
Date:

City Council
Shelia Young, Mayor
Mayor's Community Fund
March 21, 2005

In the late 90s the City of San Leandro privatized the operation of the Tony Lema Golf
Course properties. The leasing of the course went to American Golf Company. While
the IS-hole course was closed, the 9-hole course was completed and a golf tournament
was planned to reintroduce the golfing community to the newly renamed Monarch Bay
Golf Course, featuring the Tony Lema IS and the Marina 9. It was at this tournament
which allowed an opportunity to raise some money for the community. Working with the
staff at American Golf, the first Mayor's Cup tournament was held and money was
privately raised and deposited with the City and held for distribution under the auspices
of the Mayor's Community Fund.

Since 1999, $116,700 has been raised through these annual golf tournaments. In the last
few years, the San Leandro Open has also been held at the course, sponsored by the
Spanos Open Tour of California golfers. It was during this golf experience that the Pro-
Am tournament was created, and the professional's practice round is now featured as the
Mayor's Cup golf outing.

The attached list of recipients will show that more than $55,000 has been distributed
throughout the community for the benefit of schools, students, residents with special
projects and needs, and larger nonprofit organizations as well. Funds were also used in
relation to our sister city associations with Brazil, Portugal and the Philippines, as well as
travel to and from the Sister City of Ponta Delgada in the Azores.

It has been a rewarding and fun activity for the community and for me personally. The
ability to provide funding to organizations and individuals who otherwise would not
quality for regular grants has been gratifying especially in these difficult economic times.
I believe the participants and supporters of the tournaments have also found it worthwhile
to spend time with their friends and business clients while also providing a conduit for
small San Leandro projects to be funded.

I hope that future mayors will find a way to continue this beneficial program in whatever
fundraising activity appeals to them. The ability to raise and gift funds to the community
has truly been a life-altering activity for me.

CIVIC CENTER. 835 EAST 14TH STREET.
