<br />MINUTES Page 13 <br />City of San Leandro City Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting-January 17, 2006 <br /> <br />Ms. Barros thanked StopWaste.Org staff for attending tonight's meeting, and she <br />thanked ACWMA for taking a leadership role in the area of Green Building and for <br />providing training resources for the City. <br /> <br />Mayor Young commented that both of the new fire stations were constructed <br />incorporating some of the Green Building Guidelines. She encouraged the use of Green <br />Building at the Washington Manor Branch Library and the Aquatics Center. <br /> <br />Councilmember Grant thanked StopWaste.Org for giving her the opportunity to attend <br />the International Green Build Conference a few months ago, remarking that it was a <br />great learning opportunity. She commented that we are very fortunate to have <br />StopWaste.Org as a resource, and she noted that Alameda County has become <br />recognized as a leader in Green Building. Councilmember Grant stated that she would <br />like to see the City consider a policy that would not be too burdensome to the builder, <br />and use Green Building Guidelines for City buildings. She suggested creating a <br />category for the Annual Design Awards to recognize use of Green Building Guidelines. <br />Councilmember Grant commented on the need to educate the BZA and Planning <br />Commission on the issues and possibly create an environmental quality committee. <br /> <br />Councilmember Stephens commented that he has been intrigued by green building <br />aspects for years and did the home tour of Green Houses last year. He hoped for a way <br />to bring down the cost of building green to make it viable alternative. <br /> <br />Councilmember Santos commented that greater recycling and reuse of building <br />materials should be encouraged. <br /> <br />Councilmember Nardine suggested that the City partner with local nurseries and home <br />improvement stores to promote Bay-Friendly Landscaping and Green Building <br />practices. Ms. Kho indicated that Evergreen Nursery labels its plants that are Bay- <br />Friendly. <br /> <br />. Minute Order No. 2006-007, Motion Directing Staff to Prepare a Resolution <br />Endorsing and Promoting the Use of the Alameda County Residential Green <br />Building Guidelines (for New Home Construction, Home Remodeling and <br />Multi-Family Development), the U.S. Green Building Council LEEDTM Rating <br />Systems (for New Commercial Construction and Remodeling) and the Bay- <br />Friendly Landscape Guidelines (for Residential and Commercial Projects); and <br />to Prepare and Investigate Future Implementation Programs for Residential and <br />Commercial/Industrial Green Buildings.
