<br />Council District 6 Appointment Process <br /> <br />December 4, 2006 <br /> <br />applicants to be interviewed, the Council could use a nomination process to choose the applicants it <br />wishes to interview in open session. Attached is a suggested nomination matrix. <br /> <br />TIMELINE <br /> <br />The following is a suggested timeline for the appointment process: <br /> <br />. December 4. 2006 - The City Council declares its intention to appoint someone to fill the <br />upcoming District 6 Council vacancy and directs staff to provide public notice of the vacancy and <br />the application process. <br /> <br />. December 14. 2006 - Notice of Vacancy and Application Process to be published in the Daily <br />Review and San Leandro Times (two weeks prior to the opening of the application process) <br /> <br />. Januarv 2 - January 19. 2007 - Applications to be obtained and filed from Tuesday, January 2, <br />2007 through Friday, January 19, 2007 in the City Clerk's Office during normal business hours. <br />(Note: City offices will be closed from Monday, December 25,2006 - Monday, January 1, 2007.) <br /> <br />. Week of January 22. 2007 - Applications forwarded to the City Council for reVIew. <br />Councilmembers make their nominations and forward to the City Clerk for tabulation. <br /> <br />. January 29.2007 - Special Meeting ofthe Council to conduct interviews in Open Session. <br /> <br />. February 5.2007 - Council discusses and makes appointment of District 6 City Councilmember. <br /> <br />. Februarv 19. 2007 - Newly-appointed District 6 City Councilmember sworn in at the beginning of <br />the regular City Council Meeting. <br /> <br />Current Citv Council Policv <br />Previous City Council vacancies have been filled by Council appointment. <br /> <br />Previous City Council Action(s) <br />On June 29, 1998, by Minute Order No. 98-40, the City Council directed that the City Council <br />District 2 vacancy be filled by appointment rather than by Special Election; and by Minute Order <br />No. 98-41, the Council approved an application process which included a 200-word "candidate <br />statement" form used for elections and directed the application period be open for two weeks. <br /> <br />On July 27, 1998, by Minute Order No. 98-42, the City Council appointed Surlene Grant to fill the <br />vacant seat for City Council, District 2. <br /> <br />On June 4,2001, by Minute Order No. 2001-53, the City Council approved a process to appoint and - <br />fill a vacancy on the City Council, District 1, and appointed a three-member ad hoc committee to <br />review the applications and to make a recommendation to the City Council regarding the interview <br />process, including the questions for each candidate. <br /> <br />On July 23,2001, by Minute Order No. 2001-70, the City Council appointed Orval Badger to fill the <br />vacant seat for City Council, District 1. <br />
