Councilmember Starosciak thanked Carolyn Knudtson for the <br />opening of the San Leandro Aquatics Center and David Bohne and his staff for the opening of <br />thc Washington Manor Branch Library. Shc expressed overwhelming joy and honor to be <br />able to represent District 4, and she thanked Ms. Knudtson, Mr. Bohne and their staffs for a <br />remarkable weekend. Councilmetnber Starosciak commented that as a follow-up to thc <br />September 24 Union Pacific incident, the Mayor wrote a letter to UP, and a date has been set <br />for a meeting between UP representatives and Heron Bay HOA to try to prevent similar <br />situations in the future. Councilmcmber Starosciak commented that she traveled to <br />Sacramento to see new Senator Ellen Corbett and Assemblymember Mary Hayashi take their <br />oaths of office_ She noted that Assernhlymember Hayashi has been appointed the Assistant <br />Majority Whip and is also on several important committees. <br /> <br />Councilmember Stephens cchoed Councilmember Starosciak's sentiments regarding the <br />Aquatics Center and Washington Manor Branch Library events. He also complimented the <br />staff on the Tree Lighting Ceremony on J7riday, December 1. Councilmember Stephens <br />thanked Mayor Young Il.w purchasing the tree used in the ceremony. Council member <br />Stephens expressed his personal appreciation to Councilmember NarcJine for her many years <br />of dedicated service to San Leandro and for her creativity, fresh perspective, and bringing <br />solutions to the table. He also complimented Mr. Jel111anis for his approach to the Lewis <br />Avcnue problem as a public nuisance. Councilmember Stephens stated he is looking forward <br />to a pOSItive outcome soon. <br /> <br />Councilmember Santos commended Councilmember Nardine on her 25 years of public <br />service. He stated that he has enjoyed working with her over the past six years on the Council <br />and wished her the best in the future. Councilmember Santos commented on the terrific <br />even ts 0 f the past week and hoped 1l1r more such events in the f ut life. <br /> <br />Mayor Young commented that although she and Councilmember Nan_line have not always <br />seen '"eye to eye" on issues, she appreciated her dilTering ideas and approaches and thoughtful <br />insights. Mayor Young expressed appreciation for the time when she almost fainted, and <br />Council member Narcline came to her aid, She congratulated Councilmember Nardine on her <br />retirement from the City Council and wished her well in her new home. Mayor Young <br />commented that she sent a handwritten note and a big box of Ghirardelli chocolate on behalf <br />of the City and the City Council to Senator-elcct Ellen Corbett. She suggested the same be <br />done 1'01' Assemblymernber-elect Mary Ilayashi. Mayor Young also cOlnmented that she <br />would present a City flag to Senator Corbett at the Board and Commission event on <br />Deccmber II, and a /lag can be sent to Assemblymember Hayashi as well. <br /> <br />13.
