HUlnan Relations Committee meeting of May 8,2003. Accepted as Submitted. <br /> <br />Councilmember Santos remarked that no members of the faith community were <br />present at the Hunlan Relations COlnmittee meeting. Councilmember Grant noted <br />the Committee has been notifying interested parties via elnail and she received <br />replies to the last meeting announcement. She is unsure why no members of the <br />faith conlll1unity attended the meeting. <br /> <br />12. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br /> <br />Councihnenlber Badger announced the Council's Bucket Brigade team beat the School Board <br />teanl at the Fire Station 10 Grand Opening on Saturday. <br /> <br />Councilmember Nardine expressed gratitude and appreciation to Community Relations <br />Coordinator Kathy Ornelas for coordinating the Fire Station Grand Opening, to Assistant City <br />Manager Ed Schilling for a great job in leading the Council's Chili Cook-off team and to the <br />nlembers of the Council and staff who helped prepare the chili. She noted the Council photo <br />on the Govermnent Access Channel still shows the old Council and needs to be updated. <br /> <br />Vice Mayor Glaze thanked staff for the wonderful dedication of the Washington Manor <br />Middle School Ball Fields, particularly CarolYn Knudtson and members of the Public Works <br />staff. He remarked it was a great success and something we should all be proud of. <br /> <br />Councilmenlber Stephens commented the opening ceremony at Fire Station 10 with the flag <br />brought from New York City to commemorate 9-11 was very moving. He noted it was the <br />kind of day that children would remember all their lives, and complimented City staff for <br />making it a very special day. <br /> <br />Councilmember Santos cOlnmented that both the Washington Manor Ball Field dedication <br />and Fire Station Grand Opening were terrific events. He expressed hope that the City will <br />continue to enter into successful joint use agreelnents with the school districts. He noted both <br />of the new fire stations are beautiful facilities, and the neighboring residents and businesses <br />are thrilled to have them. Councilmember Santos noted the railroad spur on Aurora Drive <br />between Scott Company and Ewing needs to be removed. <br /> <br />Mayor Young displayed the trophy won by the City Council in the Chili Cook-Off. The <br />Council's chili took second place in the Judges' Choice category. Mayor Young remarked <br />that the event had a small town feel, with the bucket brigade, chili cook-off and hands-on <br />activities for children. She thanked City staff for both the Fire Station and Ball Field <br />dedications and marveled at Kathy Ornelas' ability to manage a variety of events and always <br />with a smile. Mayor Young also thanked the Council and City Manager J ermanis for <br />remenlbering her birthday at the Fire Station Opening and expressed surprise and pleasure at <br />the bouquet of roses and peach pie presented in honor of her birthday. <br />
