<br />l\UNUTES Page 11 <br />City of San Leandro City Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting-NOVEMBER 3, 2003 <br /> <br />Councilmelnber Badger thanked Chief Joe Kitchen and the Police Department for the <br />response to a sensitive situation at 350 Sybil. He commented that the manager of Albertsons <br />on East 14th Street was very impressed with the response and courtesy of San Leandro <br />officers. <br /> <br />Councilmember Badger pointed out a full-page ad in the San Francisco Chronicle taken out <br />by a group called W.O.V.E.N., a womens' anti-violence network. He noted they have n10ved <br />into a small building on Estudillo and wondered why they would take out an expensive ad in <br />the Chronicle if they are serving local residents. He asked staff to find out about the group <br />and the work they do. Councilmember Badger noted Clean and Green is getting a lot of <br />coverage in the San Leandro Times lately. <br /> <br />Councilmember Badger commented that he is still getting calls regarding the intersection of <br />Hays and Williams. He was told there have been three more accidents at the intersection, and <br />residents feel something needs to be done there. <br /> <br />Mayor Young con1mented on an article in the Daily Review regarding the County's plans to <br />develop 204 acres in the Fairmont area, and she encouraged staff to monitor the project plans. <br />She noted it is within the City's sphere of influence and will contribute a significant amount <br />of additional traffic to city streets. Mayor Young suggested City staff make contact with <br />County staff to determine the appropriate venues for the City's participation in the review <br />process. She suggested perhaps the City could request a meeting with County staff and <br />Supervisor Lai-Bitker. <br /> <br />Mayor Young shared with the Council a copy of a letter from the Port of Oakland supporting <br />the City's request for grant funding from ACTIA for the Bay Trail Slough Bridge. <br /> <br />Mayor Young announced the various events planned for November 11 in honor of Veterans <br />Day. <br /> <br />Mayor Young announced she received an invitation from the City and County of Honolulu to <br />the 2004 Japan-U.S. City SUlnmit in Hiroshima, Japan. The City is asked to form a <br />comnlunity and business group to represent the City at the conference. She will share the <br />invitation with the Chamber of Commerce and their Asian Business Council as well, to gather <br />interest. <br /> <br />Mayor Young reported she received an email from the League of California Cities regarding <br />the League's initiative measure to protect cities and announcing the speaker for the next East <br />Bay Division Meeting in Emeryville, \vho is the former mayor of Santa Clara. She mentioned <br />Council will be receiving a phone call frOln Councilmember Kevin Dowling regarding <br />n10netary support from the Council for the League's initiative measure. <br /> <br />Mayor Young con1mented that she came across a long list of work session items the Council <br />had developed. She suggested holding a work session or referring the matter to the Rules and <br />Communications Committee. She also requested that in preparation for the 2004 election the <br />City Clerk provide the Council with current rules and regulations or certifications regarding <br />run-off elections. There was consensus of the Council to schedule a work session regarding <br />
