<br />Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council and <br />San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting - December 17, 2001 <br /> <br />Page 13 <br /> <br />9. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br /> <br />A. Council Member Santos reported that a library patron expressed concern about the <br />use of pagers and cell phones in the Library and asked staff to look into the <br />necessity for such a policy. <br /> <br />B. Council Member Loeffler reported on his attendance at the National League of <br />Cities Conference in Atlanta, GA. He mentioned that cities must lobby the federal <br />government for funding to meet the costs for homeland security. <br /> <br />Council Member Loeffler also mentioned the issue of human relations was <br />discussed and advised that September 19, 2002 has been proclaimed Racial <br />Equality Day. He expressed hope that San Leandro would prepare for it. <br /> <br />Council Member Loeffler thanked Mayor Young for the Leadership Awards <br />Program and hopes those receiving the awards will also be recognized on Cable <br />Channel 15. <br /> <br />C. Council Member Glaze reported on his attendance at the National League of Cities <br />Conference in Atlanta, GA. He added that he attended a discussion on the use of <br />technology to connect government and its citizens. <br /> <br />Council Member Glaze also reported Atlanta has addressed the issue of affordable <br />housing and community revitalization by developing lofts in old commercial sites; <br />i.e., cotton mills, etc., and by rebuilding neighborhoods. <br /> <br />D. Council Member Badger expressed concern about the state of the San Leandro <br />Boys' and Girls' Club. <br /> <br />Council Member Badger also recommended adjourning the meeting in memory of <br />Ms. Gordon, the granddaughter of one of his constituents, who recently died in an <br />automobile accident. <br /> <br />E. Mayor Young mentioned a bill for homeland security block grants that was <br />introduced by Hillary Clinton and recommended investigating it further. <br /> <br />Mayor Young also reported using her Community Empowerment Funds to create <br />a flag for a new San Leandro Pride program in 2002. She would like Council <br />Members to distribute a flag to each classroom in their districts and to relate the <br />story of the flag. <br /> <br />Mayor Young inquired whether the Council would be interested in having a <br />developer make a presentation for the Council to consider a housing a project at <br />the Marina. After a brief discussion, the majority of Council Members was not <br />supportive of entertaining a presentation. <br />
