Livermore, Kathleen

From: Paul Amato [PAmato@waterboards.ca.gov]
Sent: Monday, June 04, 2007 1 :21 PM
To: Livermore, Kathleen
Subject: Please Deny Grocery Outlet Appeal

Hello Kathleen,

My name is Paul Amato and I have just recently purchased a home in the Broadmoor in San Leandro. A good
friend and long time San Leandro resident has brought to my attention that the City of San Leandro recently
denied approval to the Grocery Outlet Store at the location of the former Albertson's on Juana and East 14th. I
would like to extend my support to the City and request that any planned appeals by the Grocery Outlet be
den ied.

While I am a new resident of San Leandro, I have lived in the Bay Area and the East Bay for the past 17 years
and I believe that San Leandro will benefit from transit oriented development and stores that provide high
quality goods and services that are not currently available in the immediate community. Many communities
are improving the quality of life of their constituents by attracting non-chain businesses that add to the
character and often give back to their community. I personally do not see the Grocery Outlet as an example of
this. As I familiarize myself with San Leandro, I have observed a high concentration of chain stores and would
hope that this kind of development does not take over, especially in the downtown area.

Recognizing that the former Albertson's site could accommodate a new grocery store, if this is under
consideration, I would encourage you to consider small local companies like Farmer Joe's Organic Food Market.
You may be aware that this company recently opened it's second store in the Dimond District on Fruitvale Ave in
Oakland and having lived in that neighborhood myself, I can attest that it is a significant asset to the area.

Whatever else is proposed at this location, please support plans that mix retail and residential and provide
pedestrian friendly access. I thank you in advance for your time and attention considering what is in the best
interest of San Leandro residents.

Paul

Paul F.
