Traffic Safety Grant

2

July 16, 2007

Analysis

One of the major concerns for San Leandro residents is vehicular speeding on the streets. This
causes potential safety hazards for pedestrians and bicyclists sharing the roadway. According to
various traffic studies, the Vehicle Speed Feedback Signs potentially reduce vehicular speeds
and improve pedestrian and bicycle safety. Since the OTS funds the purchase of the Feedback
Signs only at sites that are off the federal aid system, the following nine street segments were
selected for this project:

. Aurora Drive between West Avenue BOth and Marina Boulevard-James Garfield School
. Best Avenue between San Leandro Boulevard and East 14th Street-Ranked No.1 in 2004
Traffic Calming Cycle
. Monterey Boulevard between Floresta Boulevard and Carmel Way-James Monroe School
. Dutton Avenue between Merle Court and Mitchell Avenue-Roosevelt School
. Dutton A venue between Dutton Court and Beverly A venue- Washington School
. Juniper Street between Willow Avenue and Sagewood Avenue-James Madison School
. Corvallis Street between Esser Avenue and Farnsworth Street-Corvallis School
. Dayton Avenue between Dayton Court and Wiley Street-Dayton School
. Fargo Avenue between Edgemoor Street and Beatty Street-Washington Manor School

The goal of the project is to enhance traffic safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists by
slowing down vehicular traffic on the roadways, especially around school areas. In January
2007, staff submitted a grant application for the Federal Fiscal Year 2008 OTS grant cycle to
install Vehicle Speed Feedback Signs on the above nine street segments. In June 2007, the grant
application was approved. The funds will become available on October 1, 2007. A grant
agreement must be executed by the City Manager to accept the funds.

Current City Council Policy

Not Applicable

Previous City Council Action(s)

Not Applicable

City Council Committee Review and Action

Not Applicable

Applicable General Plan Policy

.
