With the <br />city's stable economy, wide array of community programming (including library services, free <br />community events, recreation programs), responsive and efficient City government services, good <br />schools and thriving retail and commercial sector, San Leandro remains one of the best kept secrets in <br />the region. <br />What can new arrivals expect when they move to your community? <br />San Leandro is an economically balanced, moderate income community with safe, clean, healthy, <br />diverse and friendly neighborhoods; high quality, responsive City services; an active and prosperous <br />business community; a city that contv~ually reinvests in its infrastnicture and public facilities to meet <br />community need and a great environment to raise a family. <br />Healthcare/Senior Living <br />What major medical facilities serve your area? <br />Eden Hospital (full service) and Kindred Hospital (oncology) are in San Leandro. Kaiser Permanente's <br />regional ot~ces are located in San Leandro and Kaiser has recently purchased land near Highway 880 <br />with the expectation of building a new medical facility, along with a retail area of shops, restaurants, and <br />services adjacent to the medical facility, within several years. Other notable medical. facilities easily <br />accessible in the region include UCSF, Stanford Hospital, Children's Hospital in Oakland, and the new <br />George Mark Children's House hospice facility for children. <br />Have any facilities been recognized for their reputation for teaching, research, new additions, or <br />quality of care? <br />Stanford and. UCSF are known throughout the world for their research and. teaching excellence. George <br />Mark Children's House is the nation's first hospice facility for children in the nation. <br />What mix of senior housing is available in your community? <br />San Leandro has a variety of senior housing, including affordable, convalescent, assisted living and <br />independent living units, including units in several state-of--the art senior facilities that have opened in <br />recent years. <br />What organizations/services does your community provide for its senior population? <br />Paratransit services, including a free FLEX Shuttle for in-town travel. to appointments and other events; <br />lots of recreation programs, including special senior activities such as annual holiday luncheons, an <br />annual ball and senior excursions to local tourism destinations; annual health fairs geared toward seniors <br />and more. A full service senior center is also in the early planning stages and is hoped to be open in <br />several years. <br />
