Continued Discussion Re a~ rding Shape-URSan Leandro Program Chris Lim introduced the "Balanced Project Grant", which is sponsored by Tuft's University and seeks to replicate the Shape-Up Summerville Childhood Obesity Prevention project. Lim introduced Emily Kaplan, Grant Consultant, who explained the pros and cons of seeking the $300,000 grant. The grant would run for a two year period of time and would require extensive teacher and staff participation, in addition to the hiring of a full-time, skilled coordinator at an estimated cost of $100,000 per year. Superintendent Lim will be meeting with the teacher's union to see if they "buy in" to the grant proposal. The advantages of getting the grant include giving San Leandro a national reputation, thus making it easier to obtain grants in the future. Mayor Santos expressed his reluctance to move ahead with the grant because of existing school and City programs. Michael Gregory expressed his support of the grant application. Lim reported that she would take to the school board a proposed Letter of Intent to apply for the grant for their consideration.
