CITY OF SAN LEANDRO
CITY COUNCIL FACILITIES AND TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE
November 6, 2007
4:00 p.m. — 5:30 p.m.
San Leandro City Hall
835 East 14th Street
San Leandro, California
Sister Cities Gallery
HIGHLIGHTS
Committee Members: Mayor Santos, Councilmember Gregory, Councilmember Souza
City Staff Present: Michael Bakaldin, Reh-Lin Chen, Keith Cooke, Steve Hollister,
John Jermanis, Ken Joseph, Kika Myers, Uche Udemezue, Dean
Wilson
Outside Presenters: Molly McArthur, Catherine Westhall (BART representatives)
Public Present: Diana Gentry, Jim Prola
The meeting was called to order at 4:02 p.m.
1.
BART Earthquake Safety Program
John Jermanis introduced Molly McArthur and Catherin Westhall from BART. Molly
gave a PowerPoint presentation regarding BART's earthquake safety program and its
plans to seismically strengthen approximately 200 foundations/columns along the track in
the city of San Leandro. Steve Hollister asked how many columns would be worked on
at a time. Molly answered that it would be determined by the contractor based on the
location(s) and the equipment needed, as every column and/or foundation will be
assessed individually. Councilmember Gregory asked whether or not the stations would
be updated both seismically and cosmetically. Molly stated that the underground stations
are actually a good place to be in case of an earthquake and that some of the stations will
be updated, but only seismically. The funds for this project are bond money, therefore
can only be used for seismic improvements (not to make the stations look nicer).
2. Westgate Parkway
John Jermanis stated that the Timothy Drive community strongly opposed the City's
proposition for the closure of Timothy Drive. John turned the topic over to Ken Joseph,
who gave a PowerPoint presentation. Ken presented the goals for the Westgate Parkway
project, what goals had been met, and possible scenarios to further relieve traffic
congestion in the area. A discussion ensued, and Uche explained the project goals again.
