City/SLUSD Liaison Committee Highlights <br />March 20, 2008 <br />Page 2 <br />There was further discussion on bringing an improved football field back to SLHS (San <br />Leandro High School); Councilmember Grant commented on parking and the new <br />improvements to the PG&E easement. Board Member Richards stated he would like to <br />continue reviewing options for the field, but that there were immediate needs that must be <br />met (e. g., bathrooms, bleachers). Board Member Davis commented that the District was <br />not charging users enough to maintain the property. There was discussion on a potential <br />joint bond for facilities and facilities agreement. Mayor Santos noted another <br />organization that sponsors track-related events, and will make improvements. <br />Mr. Jermanis stated that the City would explore some concepts, including the Field of <br />Dreams model, and report back to the committee. <br />2. Discussion Re arg ding- Renovation and Maintenance of San Leandro Hi~hool <br />Swimming Pool <br />High School Facilities Manager Greg Dyer reported that the pool would be open for use <br />by the high school swim team and the San Leandro Swim Team by March 31. More <br />work will need to be done in the future. They will be able to operate through February <br />2009. <br />Board Member Davis expressed his hope that the City and District work closely together <br />to plan for a longer future for the facility. Mr. Jermanis stated that full cost estimates <br />should be obtained. He also mentioned that both the SLHS pool and the concept of a <br />competitive pool at Washington Manor were brought up for discussion at the recent City <br />Council retreat and will be a future discussion at a Work Session. Board Member <br />Richards mentioned that he had heard there might be pool facility grant funds available at <br />the state level. <br />3. Discussion of City and District Budget Issues <br />Superintendent Christine Lim reported that the Board will be considering hiring a <br />consultant at the April 1 meeting to conduct a survey to determine the level of <br />community support for a bond. San Leandro revenue limits are in the middle, when <br />compared to other districts in Alameda County. The District is not considering teacher <br />lay-offs at this time; 1.5 administrative positions are being considered. She asked if <br />additional survey questions related to Burrell Field and the SLHS swim pool should be <br />considered. <br />Mayor Santos reported that an Ad Hoc committee of the City Council will be meeting to <br />discuss revenue enhancements and bonds. Mr. Jermanis commented that the economy is <br />impacting all agencies and suggested that the City and District consider working together, <br />as the City is also experiencing an approximate $4 million shortfall. Councilmember <br />Gregory asked if the survey could address issued shared by both agencies. There was <br />general discussion on timing, maintenance needs, and scheduling with an election cycle. <br />Mayor Santos reported that a letter in opposition to school budget cuts had been sent to <br />the governor. <br />
