The policies and actions in the San Leandro General Plan support bicycling
and walking as viable alternatives to the automobile. Key General Plan objectives also aim to
improve bicycle safety and encourage bicycle use. In an effort to meet these goals, the City is
pursuing educational and promotional programs and safety improvements to enhance bicycling
and walking facilities.
Staff requests that $10,000 of Measure B Bicycle and Pedestrian Funds be appropriated in a new
Bicycle and Pedestrian Education account to promote alten~ative modes of transportation. One
of the immediate actions is to assist the East Bay Bicycle Coalition (EBBC) with its promotional
campaign for the Bike to Work Day on May 15, 2008. The City's contribution for the
promotional campaign in 2008 will be $5,000.
Analysis
The EBBC is anon-profit organization dedicated to promoting bicycling as an everyday means
of transportation and recreation. The EBBC is working with 33 cities to plan and promote Bike
to Work Day 2008, ahigh-profile Bay Area-wide event that will take place on Thursday, May
15, 2008 as part of National Bike Month.
