MINUTES Page 2 <br />City of San Leandro City Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting-May 5, 2008 <br />M/S/C Stephens and Prola. Ayes: 7; Noes: 0 <br />C. Presentation by Representatives of the Group "Citizens For a Safer San Leandro." <br />Connie Stephens, John Kaplan and Judith Collins, members of Citizens for a Safer San <br />Leandro, distributed literature and gave a presentation to the City Council about their <br />new group. <br />Ms. Stephens described recent incidents of crime and violence in San Leandro, which <br />prompted the formation of Citizens for a Safer San Leandro, acitizen-led group <br />dedicated to implementing solutions to fight local crime. Ms. Collins shared the <br />group's mission statement and goals. Mr. Kaplan described a project being undertaken <br />by the group to install motion-activated lighting. The group is seeking financial <br />support, merchants, and service organizations to assist with the implementation of the <br />project. <br />Councilmember Gregory presented the group with a $500 contribution from his <br />Community Empowerment Funds. <br />Vice Mayor Grant asked whether the City was providing assistance to the group. Mr. <br />Jermanis commented that he would discuss with staff what types of assistance the City <br />might be able to provide. <br />Councilmember Starosciak commented that the Washington Manor Homeowners <br />Association will be meeting next week to discuss the continuation of the Neighborhood <br />Watch program, and maybe interested in a partnership. <br />Ms. Stephens commented that Citizens for a Safer San Leandro has assembled a <br />comprehensive Neighborhood Watch kit. She announced that the group's next meeting <br />will be held this Thursday, May 8, at 7 p.m. at the San Leandro Library. Following the <br />meeting, the group will do a "walkabout" in downtown San Leandro to get a sense of <br />what downtown is like after dark. Mayor Santos stated that he will attend the meeting. <br />Mayor Santos announced that the City received an award on April 24, 2008 from the <br />Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) for the Downtown Transit-Oriented <br />Development Strategy. Just the week before, the City received the award for the TOD <br />Strategy from Breathe California. Community Development Director Luke Sims <br />commented that the he was just notified that the TOD Strategy has received an award <br />from the Northern California section of the American Planning Association. <br />3. PUBLIC HEARINGS-CITY COUNCIL <br />Public Hearing Comments are limited to 5 minutes per speaker, subject to adjustment by the <br />Mayor. When you address the City Council, you should fill out a speaker card and submit it <br />to the City Clerk so the order of speakers maybe determined and an official record of names <br />and addresses obtained. <br />
