Green Update 7 October 6, 2008
• On June 19, 2007 the City expressed support for the "Dump the Pump" campaign, a day
where citizens can show their support for public transportation.
• On Spare the Air Days, the Public Works Department voluntarily does not run gasoline-
powered hand equipment in the Parks.
PRIVATE SECTOR ACTIVITIESBUSINESS OUTREACH
• The Office of Business Development has initiated an Industrial Competitive Grant
program to the City's largest energy users to support them in implementing energy
efficiency programs and technologies. $150,000 is available in the FY 2008-2009
budget. Based on input from PG&E and Stopwaste.Org, a program will be determined
based on local business needs.
• The City is developing a San Leandro "Green Business Toolkit" that will be mailed and
handed out to businesses later this year. It features ways of decreasing waste, increasing
energy efficiency, and showcasing local businesses that recycle or offer environmentally
preferable products. By focusing on the economics of going "green" within San Leandro,
the toolkit emphasizes supporting the local economy while also cutting down on long-
distance driving.
• Waste Management, one of San Leandro's two waste haulers, has switched to using bio-
diesel (BOS) for both their fleet and onsite machinery. BOS is 5% bio-fuel and 95%
diesel, saving close to 4% of their COZ emissions. Waste Management also uses
recovered landfill gas from the Altamont Landfill to power their transfer trucks.
• ACI, which covers 60% of San Leandro's waste collection, received a grant to retrofit 24
of their trucks to decrease Nitrous Oxide and Particulate Matter emissions. The
designated vehicles were retrofitted in 2006.
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
Since the adoption of the Climate Action goals in February 2007, the City has embarked upon a
myriad of environmentally sustainable actions and programs as well as continued a number of
programs that pre-dated the Climate Action efforts. The City is working toward completion of
the Climate Action Plan (CAP) in 2010. With the support of the BAAQMD grant, the City has
hired a Climate Protection Intern and has appointed an existing City employee in the Community
Development Department to serve as the Sustainability Coordinator to continue coordinating
these inter-departmental efforts.
