Green Update 6 October 6, 2008 I'
o Collected electronics, appliances, and other household items from 550 households
at the Neighborhood Cleanup Program in May 2008. Over 300 residents hosted
garage sales at their homes and another 500 residents recycled 180 appliances and
33 tons of electronics, tires, scrap metal, wood, mattresses and yard waste at
Alameda County Industries.
o Installed permanent battery recycling containers at 3 private sites (one condo
complex, one church, and one coffee house).
o Distributed 4,000 fall leaf bags to San Leandro residents between October 2007
and January 2008.
o Distributed 7,000 bags of compost in June 2008.
o Conducted a food scrap recycling education campaign through advertising in
newspapers, on BART, on billboards, and on bus sides.
PLANNING
• The Downtown Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Plan for San Leandro designates
future housing around public transit, saving on Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) and
greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the amount of required parking.
• The potential AC Transit Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) program will complement the
pollution savings created by the TOD Plan. Regionally, BRT is projected to reduce VMT
by 21,000 VMTs per day and COZ emissions by 1,900 tons of COZ per year.
• Five additional roads will be added to the City's bicycle route as the TOD Plan rolls out.
• Other transit-supportive measures are included in the South Area Development Strategy,
adopted in April 2004, as well as a TOD plan for the Bay Fair BART station area that
will be brought to Council for consideration in 2009.
• The City will be working with the Transportation and Land Use Coalition (TALC)
beginning in September 200$ on their TravelChoice program. The TravelChoice
program consists TALC employees canvassing 7,000 households within the % mile
radius of the San Leandro BART Station. This outreach program will educate and assist
interested residents with increasing their use of public transit, which complements the
Downtown TOD plan.
• The Planning Division will present the City Council with an update to the General Plan in
2009, to include a Sustainability Element.
COMMUNITY AMENITIES AND OUTREACH
• The City continues with its sidewalk tree planting program. For the eleventh straight
year, the National Arbor Day Foundation has named the City of San Leandro a "Tree
City USA" and also awarded the City with the prestigious "Growth Award," which
recognizes environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care in Tree City USA
communities. From 2006 to 2008, the City has planted 619 trees.
• In November 2007, the City passed out approximately 450 free CFL light bulbs at City
Hall to community members and City employees.
