BID Advisory Board Member Recommendation October 8, 2008
Page 2 of 2
Ms. Marmon's business (on Merced Street south of Marina Boulevard) moved into the BID in
2006. It was previously in Downtown San Leandro at Hays and West Estudillo Streets since
2001 and was located in Oakland previous to that time. Sales have been down for the company
since 2005. It has reduced the number of employees from 32 persons to nine persons, including
six full-time and three part-time employees.
Mr. Paulovitz's business has been in San Leandro since the early 1980s. It employs 125 persons
which include 20 employees in the office and eight to nine in the shop on Beecher Street. The
business remodels or constructs the interiors of large supermarkets such as Safeway. The
business is experiencing growth and will be expanding its manufacturing onto an adjacent
property on Beecher Street.
Mr. Wahl, representing Mr. Michael Adelson, the owner of Mr. Plastics, has been in San
Leandro since its inception in 1985. It employs 15 persons. This business has also been
experiencing growth and higher revenues. He attributes the continued growth of the company to
being diversified and maintaining large corporate customers in the United States and overseas.
He stated that he has been active in the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce. He has been
Chairperson of the Ambassador's and he is currently Chair of Leadership San Leandro.
Recommendation:
Staff found that either Mr. Paulovitz or Mr. Wahl be considered for the BID Advisory Board.
Mr. Wahl was the most familiar with the BID and the LINKS Shuttle and had the most amount
of public service. Mr. Paulovitz's business is located in the northerly most area of the BID and
would provide representation in this area versus the locations of the others which are in the
central area of the BID and Coca Cola which is at the south end of the BID. Both articulated very
diverse educational and professional backgrounds. Either applicant would most likely provide
objective input and have progressive ideas in the future review of the West San Leandro Shuttle
Business Improvement District.
ATTACHMENT
LINKS Route Map with Current BID Board Members and Applicants' Business Information
P:10ffice of Business Development~Files RDA\WSL-MacArthur Area~L,INKS ShuttleAShuttle Assessment Dish`ict 2008\BID ADVISORY BOARD
RECOMMENDATION 2008.docx
