MINUTES Page 6
City of San Leandro City Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting-November 3, 2008
Councilmember Starosciak commented that she attended the BRIDGE affordable housing
tour, the first community outreach meeting held by Kaiser, and the funeral service for Luster
Knight. Councilmember Starosciak commented on the impact to Mr. Knight of being able to
drink from a water fountain, because as a child in his native Mississippi, he was denied the
use of the fountain at his neighborhood park. She suggested commemorating a water fountain
in his memory.
Councilmember Prola commented that he attended a meeting on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) at
Jefferson Elementary School; the last Downtown Farmers Market of the year; an air quality
meeting on October 27; the Kaiser community outreach meeting; the meeting on the LINKS
Shuttle hosted by Councilmember Souza for businesses in the Business Improvement District
(BID); and the funeral for Luster Knight. He commented that Mr. Knight's passing is a great
loss to San Leandro.
Vice Mayor Stephens commented that he attended the Kaiser community outreach meeting.
He noted that the commercial component of the project might be viable for a Trader Joe's.
Councilmember Souza commented that ICI has approached Trader Joe's, and they may
consider locating at the site. She commented that she attended the last Farmers Market and
the Chamber Block Party. Councilmember Souza commented that she hosted the meeting
with businesses to gauge how they feel about the BID, and she suggested that reminder
notices about the assessment ballot be sent to BID businesses in their business license renewal
letters. She also held a community meeting in her district regarding DHE's lease of the
former Levitz property. Councilmember Souza requested that the Council hold a closed
session to discuss the timeline for selection of the City Manager, prior to the expiration of Mr.
Hollister's contract.
Councilmember Gregory commented that he attended the BRT meeting, and was glad to see
some progress made by AC Transit.
Mayor Santos commented that he attended the BRIDGE affordable housing tour and the Bay
Area Silver Sentinel emergency preparedness exercise held at the County Emergency
Operations Center in Dublin. Mayor Santos commented on the City's position on BRT and
on the strides San Leandro has made in air quality.
Mayor Santos announced that tonight's meeting would be adjourned in memory of Arline
Welton Simonian, wife of Charles Simonian and a longtime resident of San Leandro; and
Luster Lee Knight, retired San Leandro firefighter, dedicated community volunteer, and
Recreation and Parks Commissioner.
13.
