Safe Routes to Schools Resolution 2 December 1, 2008
It is being suggested that Roosevelt Elementary and Bancroft Middle Schools be selected as pilot
schools for bringing the program into San Leandro. San Leandro Superintendent of Schools Lim
is supportive of the program and these two schools as pilot schools.
Information from TransForm regarding their program and how the schools would become
involved is available on their website - http://www.transformca.org/campaign/sr2s/what-our-
program-has-offer
Current City Council Policy
The City has maintained a Safe Routes to School program for a number of years, including
installation of lighted crosswalks at 10 school sites. The City adopted a bicycle route plan in the
1990s, as well as walking plan routes and made improvements to intersections near and around
schools. Additionally, the Engineering and Transportation Department provides safe route maps
to elementary schools every fall that suggest routes students should take between their home and
school.
The City has also contracted with "Safe Moves" program for educational programs at all San
Leandro schools for safe walking and riding to schools, using Measure B funds. Because the
Safe Moves program can only cover two or three schools per year, many students miss out on the
full benefit of the Safe Moves program. The ACTIA program will augment the City's efforts
and help educate even more students and their parents.
Previous City Council Action(s)
Approval of the City's existing Safe Routes to
Engineering and Transportation Department.
Schools programming established by the City's
City Council Committee Review and Action
The Safe Routes to Schools program has been discussed. at meetings of both School District
Liaison Committees.
Applicable General Plan Policy
N/A
Permits and/or Variances Granted
N/A
Environmental Review
N/A
Code Compliance Review
N/A
Board/Commission Findings
N/A
Summary of Public Outreach Efforts
N/A
