Discussion Regarding Local Tobacco Control Policies
Community Relations Representative Kathy Ornelas gave a summary of the Committee's
discussion on this topic at the last meeting, and requested direction from the Committee
regarding what local tobacco control policies it wished to pursue. Ms. Ornelas stated that the
City's current smoking ordinance should be rescinded, as its provisions have been superseded
by the passage of stricter state law. Ms. Ornelas outlined some possible options, noting that
some cities have gone as far as restricting smoking in all public places, including public streets
and sidewalks.
Committee members expressed interest in pursuing local tobacco control policies. Chair
Santos inquired about regulations for multi-unit housing, commenting that he has received
calls from interested members of the public about such regulations. Interim Police Chief Ian
Willis was asked about the difficulty of enforcing smoking regulations in multi-unit housing.
Chief Willis indicated that it would depend on how aggressively the City wanted the
regulations enforced.
