City and San Lorenzo Unified Schoo] District Liaison Committee <br />Apri123, 2009 <br />Page 2 <br />Superintendent Byas gave an update on the East Bay Arts and Royal Sunset High <br />School's excellent attendance record and premier curriculum. A discussion ensued <br />regarding the District's East Bay Arts and its neighborhood childcare services, which <br />is funded by the State. The Superintendent suggested that the Councilmembers walk <br />through Arroyo High School science classes to see the high classroom quality. <br />A discussion ensued regarding reinstituting the District's school water wells and how <br />to fund the program. <br />~ Potential Joint Use Competitive Pool <br />Superintendent Byas explained that the Joint Use Competitive Pool project will have <br />to be pushed out for one to two years. He continued to explain that the School <br />District's General Fund reserves must be maintained at three percent and with the <br />difficult budget climate at this time the District would not be able to participate in the <br />project at this time. He stated that he is hoping for the best on the upcoming May 19 <br />election, but does not feel the initiatives will pass. <br />Councilmember Souza expressed her desire to have a potential joint use competitive <br />pool project in the future. Superintendent Byas concurred and expressed interest in <br />more opportunities, as well. A discussion continued regarding the capable District <br />teaching staff. <br />• Other Potential Joint Use Projects <br />Superintendent Byas hopes to consolidate future projects together with the City. He <br />stated that the District's food services program is expanding and currently the <br />District has bid for all San Leandro Unified School District (SLUSD) food services. <br />A discussion ensued on how the District's food services program can possibly <br />expand. <br />City Manager Hollister stated that although the financial situation is bad, there are <br />`green' projects in which the District might be interested. A discussion ensued on <br />possible `green' projects, and Superintendent Byas expressed an interest for District <br />students possibly interning at the City in `green' jobs. <br />Superintendent Byas went on to describe a new $6 million District project, which <br />will soon be the District's Bay Area Digital Studio. <br />A discussion ensued regarding a possible 90-foot soccer field and track. <br />Councilmember Starosciak commented that a nine lane track would be ideal for <br />qualifying regional competitive meets. A discussion ensued on Division of the State <br />Architect (DSA) bleachers and their high cost for the District. <br />
