Minutes -City of San Leandro City Council and Page 6 San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting -October a, 1999 Mayor Young thanked the Council for the comments regarding the ls` Annual Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament and indicated that the event raised funds for the Sister City Program. She indicated that although they have not completed the final accounting of monies raised, it appears they have raised approximately $7,000 for the program. The Mayor then presented a framed golf flag signed by the architect, John Harbottle, to those Council Members who were unable to stay until the end of the golf tournament event. The Mayor also indicated that the Trivia Bee will be held on October 22, 1999, and that the City Council needs ro choose a team. The Mayor concluded by commenting on a letter she received from Shirley Dean, Mayor of Berkeley, regarding the proposed area code 510 overlay from the phone company. She indicated that PacBell intends to overlay a new area code in the 510 area which will result in everyone having to dial 11 numbers anytime you call anyone, including your next door neighbor, starting next April. The Mayor continued by commenting that Berkeley has speared-headed a campaign to prevent this from happening and added that the City Council may want to start their own letter-writing campaign against this. Council Member Glaze indicated that the City of Los Angeles has filed a lawsuit to delay the implementation of this program in the Los Angeles area. The Mayor noted that Berkeley has filed a lawsuit also. She added that the letter received from Mayor Dean indicates that Berkeley feels that several recent actions of the various regulatory agencies are making some impact and that the constant "hammering" of unhappy users may cause it not to happen at all. 7.
