Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council
February 2, 1998
Page - 7 -
2. Vice Mayor Loeffler commented on the recent A.C. Transit meeting
regarding West Juana, noting the attendance was sparse by residents.
He noted he will be gone for the next couple of weeks on vacation,
out of the country. Knowing the Finance Committee would be meeting
regarding the budget while he is gone, he noted he feels the process
of the Finance Committee should not be just during budget time - it
should be ongoing. He noted he also sits on the Facilities
Committee, and he feels costs are getting way ahead of what the
Council may assume costs are. He feels the Council should have a
budget that is real and that there should be a separate budget for
the Mayor and each Council Member regarding expenditures. He would
propose that there be a budget committee taking a look at that issue.
With reference to his leaving for India on Wednesday, he commented
briefly on the honor bestowed upon Mr. Fred Korematsu and how that
relates to the City of San Leandro.
3. Council Member Lothrop thanked and commended those who worked on the
Measure B issue.
4. Council Member Young noted she recently met with the City Manager and
the General Manager for Bayfair Shopping Center; and, after having
discussed the shortage of meeting space since the closure of the
library for renovation, it had been suggested that there might be
possible meeting space available at Bayfair. She noted that
interested groups should contact Kathy Ornelas at City Hall, or they
could contact her directly.
Council Member Young concluded by requesting this evening's meeting
be adjourned in memory of former Mayor of Oakland, Lionel J. Wilson.
Mayor Corbett added that Mr. Wilson was very active in this region
and was a former candidate for Governor from our sister city of San
Francisco across the bay. She noted that Mr. Wilson had worked very
closely with San Leandro's past Mayor, Jack Maltester, as a former
President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. She further added that
Mr. Wilson was very well known through the legal profession and was
the first African American to be elected as Mayor of the City of
Oakland. She concluded by stating that we pass on condolences to
his wife and family.
Mayor Corbett concluded by saying, on behalf of Joseph Alioto, we
send our condolences to his family and thank him for the impact he
has had on many lives throughout this region.
5. Mayor Corbett noted, in addition to Lionel Wilson, she would ask that
the Council adjourn the meeting in memory of former Mayor of San
Francisco, Joseph Alioto.
