Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council and Page - 6 -
San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Meeting - February 17, 1998
Council Member Young complimented staff on the proposal before the Council
and stated there is a need to look at the issue and number of signs overall.
She would also like to see signs that say "Children at Play."
Council discussion continued regarding the new design and the need to look
at overall sign pollution. It was noted there should be coordination of
color and shapes, location, and updating of current signs. It was agreed a
uniform sign policy should be considered. The use of poles already in
existence was discussed, with respect to eliminating signs in a "totem pole"
manner.
Council discussed whether to move forward with tonight's proposal or to have
a uniform sign policy reviewed first. Council Member Young commented that
there is a need for the direction signs. She feels there is also a need for
a sign study, but she would like to see this particular signage program go
forward.
It was suggested that this item be continued to March 2, 1998, at which time
staff can come back to the Council with a proposal on the timing for a sign
policy which would address the issue of reducing the number of signs and
their placements throughout the city and address some of the concerns as
expressed during the discussion.
The following Motion was then introduced:
Minute Order No. 98-10, Resolution Approving an Administrative Policy for
the Placement of Directional Signs for Business Districts, Recreational
Facilities, Religious Institutions, Government Facilities, and Shopping
Centers in the Public Right of Way (provides fora uniform, directional-sign
program to direct residents and visitors to important destinations within
the City). (1049)
The City Council continued the matter of a Resolution Approving an
Administrative Policy for the Placement of Directional Signs for Business
Districts, Recreational Facilities, Religious Institutions, Government
Facilities, and Shopping Centers in the Public Right of Way to the March 2,
1998, City Council Meeting, and directed staff to return to Council with an
indepth report and proposed overall policy on the size/color of signs, and
a plan to reduce the number and location of them throughout the City.
M/SJC Young and Glaze. Ayes: 6; Noes: 0; Absent: Loeffler
A. Ordinance No. 98-04, An Ordinance Amending Chapter 2 of Title II of the
San Leandro Municipal Code Relating to Business License Fees for the
Usual and Current Expenses of the City and Making This Matter an Urgency
Measure to Take Effect Immediately. (1055/1203)
- Passed to Print and Adopted
MJ5/C Lothrop and Galvan. Ayes: 6; Noes: 0; Absent: Loeffler
