,y
Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council Meeting Page - 15 -
March 2, 1998
2. Council Member Polvorosa commented on his attendance on behalf of the
Council at the recognition of a teacher, Miss Heck, at Bancroft
Middle school last week.
Council Member Polvorosa also commented on his participation in the
selection of an outstanding Portuguese person for the UPEC
Organization located in San Leandro.
3. Council Member Galvan recognized John Chovanes as he was one of the
residents who had the honor of having an audience before President
Clinton recently on behalf of the residents on Hillside Drive. He
recognized his leadership in pulling those folks together and noted
there are eight homeowners who are paying for the geologist's work
out there. He further commended staff for their proactiveness
regarding this matter.
With regard to the library retrofit project, Council Member Galvan
asked that the Facilities Committee take a look at the square-footage
allocation for staff, as the library is closed now and they are being
housed within City Hall. Also, he noted the Committee should take a
look at the square footage of the Karp Room as it relates to senior
facilities, so we don't have to use new construction to add onto the
library - that maybe senior facilities can be expanded into that
facility. He continued that, somehow, within the costs, anew senior
meeting facility could be built somewhere in the community. He noted
parking has been an issue for the seniors' meeting facility.
Mayor Corbett stated that she, too, is proud of John Chovanes, as he
has done a good job of pulling his neighbors together. She noted
that John had the opportunity to specifically direct his comments to
the President regarding this daunting challenge that was referred to.
She added that the President commented that insurance companies,
residents, and businesses need to sit and talk about these types of
losses that, up to this point, have been uninsured. She concluded
that it was a great honor for her to represent the Council before the
President and be able to explain that we had a neighborhood and a
City that were willing to work very closely together to deal with
these issues and to mitigate a situation that would have been more
costly had we not had the opportunity to try and get these homes out
of harm's way.
9.
