Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council Meeting Page - 11 -
May 4, 1998
B. Reports on City Council Committees
None
C. City Council Comments
1. Council Member Young commended staff on the recent Charrette
regarding the Bal Theater.
Council Member Young also reported on attending the groundbreaking
for 1140 Fairway; urged a speedy response to the Norton Street
residents regarding their appeal on speed humps; and encouraged the
Policy Committee to meet soon to finalize how special recognition of
specific people could be addressed through gifts/donations; i.e.,
John Justino, and special recognition to be considered for the
Halcyon area.
Council Member Young also encouraged a meeting to be set with the
Policy Committee so that the City Council Handbook can be finished
prior to the new Council coming on board.
2. Vice Mayor Loeffler commented that he agreed with Council Member
Young regarding her comments as they related to the Policy Committee.
3. Council Member Lothrop commented on the recent Sabor Latino '98 Dance
she attended and what a successful and incredible event it was. She
suggested staff contact Girls, Inc., to determine how it was that
they organized such a successful event, adding that the City might be
able to learn from their experience.
Council Member Lothrop also commented on having attended an event at
Alta Mira last Monday and noted they had received several National
Awards this last year. She expressed concerns with the upkeep of the
building and asked if this issue could be placed on the Facilities
Committee agenda to research the City's relationship with Alta Mira
as it might relate to maintenance and programming.
Wandzia Grycz noted she has received a preliminary assessment from
the Building Engineer, and staff will be summarizing the issues
relating to maintenance and programming and will provide a report to
the Council in the near future.
4. Vice Mayor Loeffler questioned the status of the appeal from the
Seagate Homeowners' Association as it relates to the FEMA Flood Plan
issue. Staff initially responded that the deadline for filing the
appeal is approaching, and the City Engineer and Development Services
have been in contact with the County, which submits the appeal.
There have been indications that, although the responsibility lies
with the County to file the appeal, there is not enough time for all
the documentation and the letter to be sent. Council was assured
City staff is working in concert with Alameda County on these issues.
