Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council and
San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Meeting -May 18, 1998
Page - 3 -
H. Paul Cayere, 773 Juana, addressed the Council in support of the Network
Conference Center development. With regard to the proposed
Redevelopment Area, he added that the Chamber of Commerce has taken a
position of support and thus is urging Council's support. He noted the
Chamber would like representation from the business owners in that area,
that the purpose of the funds should be to maintain and expand growth,
that property owners should be indemnified from potential hazards to be
found, and that the Council support reinvestment in the industrial area
with tax incentives. He hopes this will be a team effort between the
Redevelopment Agency, businessowners, and the community.
I. Tom Guarino, San Leandro Chamber of Commerce, addressed the Council in
support of the proposed Redevelopment Area and complimented staff
members June Catalano and Debbie Potter for their willingness to meet
and work through the issues.
J. Jim Dupont, Representing Union Local #2850, 548 - 20th Street, Oakland,
addressed the Council, stating they have not been truly invited into the
process (referencing the Network Conference Center issue). He stated he
feels it would be a mistake for the project to continue along this
track. If the project moves ahead without them, there will be long-term
labor strife.
K. Laverne Anderson, 1495 - 159th Avenue, addressed the Council, thanking
the people who worked on the weeds on Fairway Drive. He also voiced
concern with weeds at the fence on Fairway Drive, on Marina Boulevard
across from Jack-in-the-Box, and that there are weeds at the
Veterinarian Shop on East 14th Street. Referencing the Broadmoor
Cormnunity Center, he noted problems with roots of trees and damage to
the sidewalks. He suggested staff consider replacing the trees after 10
or 15 years to keep this from happening. He also questioned staff about
what is happening down at the Lloyd Wise site.
The City Manager responded that Lloyd Wise no longer has his GM
Dealership, but will be opening other dealerships in addition to his
Honda Dealership, which is expected to open later this year. The
Hyundai Dealership is open now.
L. Larry Norry, 2532 Williams Street, addressed the Council regarding the
various options regarding the Network Conference Center.
M. Lou Filipovich, 15376 Laverne Drive, addressed the Council, stating he
is a candidate seeking office in anon-partisan election. He added that
no one has asked any questions of substance regarding the budget or the
Redevelopment Agency items. He further stated that no one spoke in
opposition to those items either. He voiced concerns with economic
development versus redevelopment and read into the record a letter
regarding redevelopment agency law and voter participation.
