Minutes -City of San Leandro City Council Meeting
December 7, 1998
Page 5
Council Member Loeffier reported that he attended the AC Transit Swearing-In
Ceremony for Alice Creason and Pat Piras, who represent San Leandro, and stated he
was impressed by the woman who was elected from the south part of our County. He
noted she is a senior citizen who spoke very eloquently about some of the issues out
there -having to do with weekend service. He noted that issues were raised regarding
weekend and holiday service by AC Transit in this County. Council Member Loeffier
strongly urged the Council to consider forming a Senior Citizen Advisory Committee to
look at these issues.
Council Member Loeffier also reported that he attended the San Leandro Chamber of
Commerce Awards Dinner on December 2°a and listened to Marlin Fitzwater, as well as
others. He noted David Sams was recognized as the recipient of the Entrepreneur
Award.
In conclusion, Council Member Loeffier noted that he attended a Community Service
Meeting at the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce, and they discussed whether or not
the City would be interested in supporting America's Promise, which is a program
Colin Powell launched some years ago. The City of San Leandro has not taken formal
action on this issue, but he would suggest that, if the Council is interested, we work
with the Chamber of Commerce on this program. The program focuses on mentoring
and bringing together the business community.
Council Member Loeffier also mentioned he had received a call regarding the change in
the City's garbage pick-up. He noted it was from senior citizens in the Marina Gardens
area who were concerned that, if they live in condominiums, where they don't have
curbside clearly defined, would they be accessible to the pick-up service.
Mayor Young clarified what the Council, given Council Member Loeffier's comments,
wanted to forward onto staff to respond to or forward to specific Council Committees.
Council agreed that: the refuse question from the Marina Gardens area will be
responded to by the City Manager; the suggested formation of a Senior Citizens'
Advisory Commission Regarding AC Transit Bus Services will be referred to the Rules
and Communications Committee; the ADA/Gas Station issue will be responded to by
first drafting a letter from the Mayor to be sent to the State and Federal Legislature
regarding the issues expressed, and once a response has been received, the Council will
be informed and further direction sought; and the America's Promise Program will be
reviewed by Council Members Lothrop and Loeffier, and they will put together a
presentation to the Council for consideration.
4. Mayor Young continued her comments by noting she attended the Tree Lighting
Ceremony and the Miracle on East 14`~ Street Event. She noted they were both well
attended and were wonderful events.
