Reports on City Council <br />Rules and Communications Committee -- Vice Mayor Galvan reported on the <br />discussions at the last meeting, which took place November 24, 1998. <br />Council Member Loeffler questioned the Committee's remarks regarding "visioning" <br />and stated he hopes it will not be limited to only the General Plan. He would like a <br />clearer statement of what "visioning" entails. <br />C. City Council Comments <br />Council Member Nardine congratulated Council Member Grant and staff members for <br />their efforts in completing the application for the $50,000 U. S. Environmental <br />Protection Grant. <br />Council Member Nardine also congratulated Council Member Lothrop and staff for <br />their efforts regarding the Honduras Relief effort. <br />Council Member Nardine continued by congratulating the Fire Department on their <br />quick response to the fire at Woodrow Wilson School. She suggested the Council <br />recognize the teacher that made the 911 call, as she saved a $10 million dollar school. <br />With regard to Homeowners' Association Newsletters and incorrect information that is <br />sometimes stated in those letters, Council Member Nardine suggested the City Manager <br />could respond by personally calling or contacting the editor of those various <br />publications and give them clear and factual information. <br />2. Council Member Glaze requested that the Council adjourn the meeting this evening in <br />memory of Shirley Simpson, former Library-historical Commissioner. <br />3. Council Member Loeffler commented on the issue surrounding gas stations as it relates <br />to ADA compliance. He suggested further research be done given there are few full- <br />service gas stations in San Leandro and they are much more expensive. He noted the <br />higher costs appear to apply mostly to seniors and physically handicapped individuals <br />who need help in getting gas. He feels there is a pattern going on in reducing services <br />that has an impact on senior citizens and on those who may be eligible under the ADA <br />legal status. He would like to see more research on what is the status of our residents. <br />
