Quarterly Update
Second Quarter 2009
City of San Leandro, Office of Business Development
835 East 14th Street, San Leandro, CA 94577
(510)577-3311 I ci.san-leandro.ca.us
Redevelopment Agency to Purchase Downtown Albertsons Site
The Redevelopment Agency
has entered into an Agreement
with Red Mountain to purchase
the 1.7-acre former Albertsons site
on East 14th for $6.175 million.
The site will be used for temporary
replacement parking during the
demolition and construction
of the new downtown parking
garage. The long term vision
for the site is to develop it into a
vibrant mixed-use development
with retail along East 14th Street
and residential above, consistent
with the City's Transit Oriented
Development Strategy.
Here's what you can expect
in the near future.... Red Mountain
plans to demolish the building in
July and, following demolition, the
City will take ownership. The site
will remain closed to the public
due to security issues until the
temporary replacement parking
lot is constructed. The City plans
to remove the chain link fence and
place k-rails (temporary concrete
barriers) across the five driveways.
The design and specifications for
the lot are scheduled to go to
Council for approval on July 20,
2009.
Commercial Facade Improvement Program
Scribner Center/
Englander Restaurant -Aesthetic
improvements to the exterior of
Scribner Center and an expanded
outdoor dining area for the
Englander Restaurant were
completed in June. The building
was painted, the sidewalk in the
Parrott Street parking lot was
increased to 20 feet and decorative
landscaping was added. The
improved outdoor dining patio at the
Englander creates a very enjoyable
dining experience, and upgraded
entrances to both the Comedy Club
and the restaurant substantially
improves the building's facade.
The Agency contributed $85,000
of the approximately $350,000 cost
of the project through the Facade
Improvement Program.
Outdoor Dining in Joaquin
Plaza -Agency staff has been
working with the restaurant owners
surrounding the new Joaquin Plaza
to create desirable outdoor dining
areas. Staff has helped Los Pericos
Taqueria, Tapioca Express and
Sergio's select quality furniture and
umbrellas and will be contributing
up to 50% of t11e cost of this furniture
through the Facade Improvement
Program as well as assisting the
business owners in acquiring the
necessary permits.
Inside This Issue.
