Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council Meeting Page - 10 -
November 17, 1997
C. City Council Comments
1. Council Member Young commented on the San Leandro Garden Club, noting
they are having their 35th Anniversary. She requested the Mayor
direct that a Proclamation be done. She also commented on the 40th
Anniversary of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) and
asked that a Proclamation be done for them also. She concluded by
requesting staff look into merging the Farmers' Market in 1998 with
the one at Bayfair on Saturdays.
2. Council Member Glaze commented on the recent Veterans' Day event,
noting how successful it was and how lucky they were to have a sunny
day.
3. Vice Mayor Loeffler commented on the recent Boys & Girls Club
Breakfast and commended Police Chief Maginnis for his excellent
presentation. He noted for the Council the new Christmas Ornament he
placed before the Mayor for San Leandro's 125th Anniversary
Celebration. He concluded his comments by suggesting the Council
consider a citizen committee to do long-range planning regarding
issues facing San Leandro in the 21st century.
4. Council Member Lothrop stated she is interested in seeing the City
take a hard look at the General Plan and would like to see community
involvement.
The City Manager noted the Development Services Department is looking
into that issue.
5. Council Member Lothrop stated she enjoyed the Veterans' Day Parade
and thanked Kathy Ornelas for her efforts in planning the event. She
commented further on the youth crossing guards in the parade and
suggested the City look into what the cities of San Jose and Oakland
are doing in terms of involving youth in the crossing guard effort.
6. Vice Mayor Loeffler added that most school districts have moved away
from using kids to using adults for crossing guards.
Mayor Corbett suggested that Council have staff come back with a
report on what San Jose and Oakland are doing.
Vice Mayor Loeffler said the program has to be administered by the
School District, so it would make more sense to place it on a future
School District/City Council Liaison Committee agenda.
7. Mayor Corbett, regarding the Skateboard Park, noted liability exists
whether there are people there or not. She feels the issue of
supervision should be reviewed thoroughly.
In conclusion, the Mayor started to make some brief remarks in
response to comments made earlier by Mr. Filipovich regarding funding
for senior citizens but was interrupted by remarks made by Mr.
Filipovich and other members of the audience.
